first blowout

middle of a cool day (this past sunday, central NY state) and raining, only going about 40-45mph. Checked tire pressure before we left (about 125miles into the drive). Felt quite the rumble, and could see smoke in the passenger mirror. Wow was that tire destroyed! can't figure out how to post a photo, but ****.

I thought I was fully prepared for this, had 2 jacks, a spare, 2 inflators, lug wrench.

Was getting started when I realized...lug wrench for my TV is 3/4. TT...13/16. So 1/16 of an inch cost me a couple hours! I knew they were different sizes, but forgot until it was needed. Called AAA and being a holiday weekend, in the middle of nowhere, it was going to be a couple hours wait. A police officer pulled behind us to check on us, and we explained what was up. An AutoZone was only 2miles away, and he offered to drive my wife to get the right lug wrench! So we were back in business....and literally as I lowered the jack, all ready to get back on the road, the tow truck pulled behind us.

Very grateful nobody was hurt, no real damage, and a big thanks to a very friendly officer!

I'll now be lurking the forums figuring out what new tires to buy. current tires are about 2.5yrs old, this one blew at about 10,500 miles. The rest of the drive home was about 1,000 more miles, so my spare now has 1,000 miles, and the other tire 11,500.

I've looked at the Goodyear Endurance, but I don't see the right size (ST185/80R13).

It isn't, smallest is 205/75 R14 ... include info about your trailer in your SIG then others can offer suggestions that would be useful. ;)

My own suggestion now that we know your tire size would be a Carlisle HD in LR D.

thanks for the tip. It's a Coachman Clipper 17BH. The current tires are Westlake ST185/80R13, i believe LR D, speed rating L

  • Sorry, I can't speak to the TPMS danimal53. I'm going to be interested on what others recommend in this thread though.
  • was looking at TPMS as well. of course I have no idea if it was a nail or whatever. any recommendations for a decent tpms? Don't need best of the best, just something reliable.
  • Instead of jacking up consider a home built ramp if a two axel TT. Really speeds up tire changing.
  • And you know how this just wasn't a nail in the tire that let the tire go low on pressure and go BOOM?

I've towed for almost 40 years with only 1 tire that went away. And that was for sure a low air pressure deal.

The way you describe it for sure it was a low air pressure deal also.

My advice? Save the money for new tires and put it into a TPMS. You will be far ahead by doing this IMHO.

Your current tires were almost for sure manufactured off shore. JMO, but I'd recommend you do what many of us have recently done - replaced our off shore bombs with a set of Goodyear Endurance ST rated trailer tires which are manufactured in the US. My size - ST 205/75 R14 - were an upgrade to LR D from the previous LR C bombs that came stock with the trailer. And although I had lucky horseshoes because one of my tires failed on my driveway instead of out on the highway it's still nonetheless an experience I'd just as soon not repeat. The Endurance is worth your consideration. :B

Completely agree, they came with the trailer (bought new from dealer). I've looked at the Goodyear Endurance, but I don't see the right size (ST185/80R13). I suppose I could/should get new wheels too? They are just steel, no fancy upgrade to aluminum alloy or anything. I'll talk to the guys at the tire shop and see. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how I look at it) we're likely done travelling/camping for the season anyway, so I'm in no rush, can wait for whatever needs to be ordered.
