I am of the understanding that the 5gal/20lb cylinder actually restricts it to 4.5 Gal as per the new safety valves. So that would be about 2 lbs right there.
NOPE.......
The new (Sept 1998) OPD valves are a backup safety device to prevent overfilling of propane cylinders. They are a float design that shuts off filling at 80% capacity which is SAME capacity cylinders where suppose to be filled to prior to OPDs.
Bleeder valve is connected to tube that extends down into cylinder and is set at the 80% level mark so with bleeder open filling was suppose to be stopped when liquid spurted out.
BUT noting stopped anyone from overfilling....hence the OPDs
20# cylinder is roughly 4.9 gallons at the 80% capacity level
30# cylinder is roughly 7.3 gallons at 80%
40# cylinder is roughly 9.7 gallons at 80%
(Gallon propane roughly 4.1# per gallon....temp compensated)
Whether filled by weight, by bleeder valve, by OPD -----80% is FULL
