Ford 150 V6 3.5L EcoBoost

Hello,

Does anyone tow with a 2012 or 2013 F150 V6 3.5L EcoBoost with a 3.55 rear end? Ford claims it has 365 hp and 420 lbs of torque which is more than my Chevy ¾ ton with a 6L. I will be towing a 30’ travel trailer that is 5,700lbs empty so I’m figuring it’s 7,700lbs loaded. I live in Illinois and we are just weekend campers and only tow it 70 miles one way on flat ground. Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Craig
  • We've got a 2014 XLT w/max towing and 3.73 gears. We tow a 28' trailer that weighs about 6,500# loaded. We just got back from a 4ooo mile trip from the Pacific NW to Colorado and Utah and back. This was our first big trip with the EB and I have to say I am liking it more all the time. We pulled over passes in Colorado up to a little over 12,000 ft with no problem. On the way home coming over Stevens Pass in Washington state a guy with a Dodge Cummins pulling a medium sized fiver passed us just before the final climb to the summit. I was cruising at about 62 mph and he was probably going about 65. As the grade steepened his speed started to drop off. I had a huge smile on my face as we cruised past him still at 62 (with very little effort) and he was probable down to 55 or so with a bit of black smoke coming out the back.

As far as the gears go, I think the 3.55s would work just fine as long as you're not going over any big mountains. You can always just gear down a bit more.

The mileage has been a bit disappointing but probably to be expected. We average about 9 mpg towing as long as long as we aren't going over a lot of big hills. I think on mostly level at a moderate speed it would probably be about 10.

    Hope this helps.

  • Yes, there is a wide range of payloads for half tons. A crew cab 4WD Platinum F-150 can have under 800 pounds on the tire and loading sticker. I have seen a truck on the lot @ 792 pounds. Typical mid trim XLT crew cab 4WD more like 1400 pounds. Regualr cab with HD payload, 30000 pounds, but I think there are 5 of those built since 2011.
  • Half tons have 750-3000 pounds of payload. ?

    I traded an 06 F150 v6 no turbo (payload 1700) on my 2104 f 150 ecoboost Payload @(1700). I also have a 2010 f 150 4.9 v8 (payload about 1600).
My trailer only weighs about 4500 lbs loaded (scaled) and even with 3:15 axle, the ecoboost is much stronger and faster than my 4.9 v8.
Of course I'm in FL so , nothing bigger than a hill.
None with max tow, or max payload, and I believe I'm still rated to tow almost 9000 with the eco.
All payload ratings are from door stickers.
  • skipnchar who sometimes posts here, has been towing a pretty large trailer with that engine for a few years. He is a smart guy & very helpful, send him a PM for some good info.
  • The Ecoboost has plenty of power. Few people complain about how well it pulls. I test drove a couple and really want one. If Ford had the Ecoboost in a 2012 Expy, I'd probably have it instead of a Suburban. However, towing 7000+ pound TT can get some half tons into trouble with payload. Half tons have 750-3000 pounds of payload. As you shop, take a look at the as equipped payload on the tire and loading sticker as you shop. Make sure there is enough for 1000-ish pounds of tongue weight plus the people and cargo in the truck.
  • OP,
If you're under your ratings when fully loaded, you should be good.

The 3.55 isn't ideal, but it would work just fine.

I'm pretty sure you are over most of your ratings though.

A friend of mine has identical truck to me w/o HD payload, and he is right at his payload limit with a 8500# trailer.
If I remember correctly, the F150's GVWR is lower w/o Max tow also.
  • I do and have the max tow and the HD package. My payload is in the 2400 lb range with the tow rating of 11,200. Our trailer is 8390, dry weight. We weighed on our last trip out and under all of our weight ratings by at least 10%.

We compared our door stickers to a friends 2007 F250 and ours were so much higher on payload and on tow capacity.

I rounded up to 8,000 lbs. Figuring 15% tongue weight, you'll be at 1,200 on the ball, not including your weight distributing system. How much payload does this Ecoboost have? (sticker is on the driver door jamb)

Ecoboost F-150's can be equipped to tow heavy trailers, and reports here say they do well, but a 3.55 gear equipped Eco means it doesn't have the payload package or the Max Tow option.
