Check out the 2010 HD shootout at pickuptrucks.com. They towed the same 10k trailer with 2500 gas and diesels. The times were very close.
32-33 seconds up a 7% grade for the gas trucks, and 28-31 seconds for the diesels.
23-24 seconds towing 10k down the quarter mile for the gas trucks, 21-23 seconds for the diesels.
The gassers had lower axle ratios and more hp, the diesels had higher (numerically lower) axles and more tq.
