To me, the knock on the EcoBoost is not it's pulling power. It has demonstrated itself to be far superior to naturally aspirated V6 engines, and is on par, or maybe even slightly better than a larger displacement gas V8.
It is a very good towing motor. IMO, where it has not lived up to expectations/hype is in MPG. Not talking about the 2.7, but the 3.5 does not have a MPG advantage over the competitively powered V8s from Chevy and Dodge, towing or single.
What motor is Ford targeting as competition for the 2.7? I always thought that the Chevy 5.3 (especially the new one) was more of a competitor to the 3.5. And does RAM even offer a V8 smaller than the 5.7 anymore?
The 2.7 will out pull the 3.0 EcoDiesel, but I doubt they will be competitors in MPG.
I think a lot of people were expecting 20mpg as an average with the 3.5L Ecoboost. On a highway run I can do 18 pretty consistently. Coming from my 5.4 I would rarely do 16 on a good day. My average over 4,000 miles mixed city driving is 16.2, for a truck im pretty dang happy.
