What is ideal is a broad and flat torque torque curve. Why? Because that results in a broader and flatter horsepower curve. And horsepower is the measure of work potential.
It is informative to take a bunch of torque curves, and using the horsepower formula, graph the horsepower curves on a worksheet. Pretty soon it becomes clear--torque and rpm make horsepower, and the flatter the torque curve, the flatter the horsepower curve.
