Off hand, I would think at least every 3 months to be sure it's the right winter/summer mix?
I rotate mine out a couple of times a year. The one I pay attention to is in the fall before it gets to cold. The stations here have already switched to winter blend at this point.
I've yet to actually need it in a pinch, but it's cheap insurance. I also carry extra spare tires for the trailer on longer trips.
