Ford 26 gallon tank

I'm getting ready for the snowbird trip in my new Super Duty. As you prob know, the fuel tank holds a measly 26 gallons. At about 12 miles per, that's not far on the fabled "top half of the tank." I'll likely throw in a nasty 5 gal can extra, but have others added an extra fuel tank etc.? The possible Alaska voyage has me concerned.
  • We added a 90 gallon Transfer Flow auxiliary tank to our 08 GMC Dually. Can now go almost 2000 miles empty or 1300 miles towing. It's nice when we find diesel at a great price and fill up saving some money.
  • Transferflow makes some really large replacement tanks.

Do you have a 1 ton?

The dually has no real weight restrictions, but a 3/4 ton that is towing a fifth wheel is already pretty full of weight, not a great candidate for an extra 300 pounds of fuel in the larger tank.

As for gas engines, you really can not install a second tank, per EPA regulations, due to the vapor loss from the second tanks.

Good luck with your new fuel tank, and have fun camping! Get a copy of Milepost now, and plan your Alaska trip well in advance.

    Fred.
  • Got rid of the 29 gallon stock tank like AP did and replaced it w/ a 50 gallon Transfer Flow tank. Like the other poster, love it. I like the ability to go 350-400 miles before filling back up VS every 200 w/ stock tank.
  • Our '04 has a 38 gallon tank. I'd like an extra tank someday too.

My older Ford CCSB 6.8 only has a 29 gallon tank. I bought two five gallon gas cans for peace of mind.
  • 12 mpg would be great. I have 25g and 8mpg for about three hours max run time.
I suppose it is good to stretch every two or three hours anyway.
Only once did I come real close to walking for fuel.
  • I know. I got an old Chevy half ton for a work truck right now and it has a 25 gal tank. I'm filling up like every other day.
    Haven't had a pickup without a 35-36 gal tank for a while.
  • A friend did the Alaska trip with a shortbed Duramax (26 gallon tank) and never had any issues with low fuel, though he did take two 5 gallon cans.

Titan Tank has a replacement tank - that's the best option to go, that way you aren't taking up space in the truck bed with an aux fuel tank.

Is your truck "NEW", as in a 2017 model year? Or a "new to you" previous model year truck?

2017 has nothing with a 26 gallon tank, per the specs i screenshotted below:

  • If you have a new Super Duty, and you have a 26 gallon tank, you must have a really short bed. Assuming your truck has a diesel engine, you can add an auxiliary fuel tank. If it's the gasser, you cannot add a separate tank. Be careful if you want to tow a fiver, though.
