Saying a truck doesn't struggle on the hills of Florida isn't saying much. OP, most any small block V8 is going to be the low end of towing ability. I would certainly want the V10 if I were buying a Ford. It seems to be a good engine with a fairly flat torque curve. I would not ignore the GM 6.0 or 8.1. The big block was made up thru 2007. I had one in an '01 dually and it was great. It was smooth, powerful, quiet, and reliable. Also, the 8.1L in a truck gets you the Allison automatic.
