ford 5.4

Well, my wife has talked some sense into me and I will not be trading for the dodge v-10 that I asked about. With two kids, I really need a crew cab truck. The only experience with a ford v-8 that I have is with my 2008 f-150 with the 4.6L and 3.55 gears. To say the least, I was disappointed! I traded for the dodge I have now 360/3.55 and it was a huge improvement in power. Will I be happy with the power of the ford 5.4L in a crew cab truck f250/f350? Or should I rule them out and look for a V-10? My current trailer is 7500lbs dry, and with two small kids I figure the quantity of stuff I will bring camping will only grow.

I guess what I am asking, is will the 5.4 be equivalent to my current 360 in pulling power? If it will be any less, I will just opt for a v-10 as I feel like I am border line on power as it is.

  • I had an '01 CrewCab with the 5.4L, 3.73 gears. It did an okay job pulling our 18 foot trailer (approx 3800 dry). On the big hills though it starts to struggle.
  • Shop the V10's as that 4.6 with 3.55's is not even close to the 360 engine. Then again the 360 wasn't that hot either but it would kill the 4.6 in towing, well until the tranny goes south :E
  • My last truck was a 5.4L F-150 SCab and it pulled my 5,000# trailer like a dream but.... in an F-250/350 and your trailer you really will not be happy with the 5.4L. Get a V-10 and you will not be sorry. Our new (to us), Class C has the 305HP/420 '# V-10 and we love it. The V-10 is a beast that loves to work. :C
  • In the short time I had the V-10 I was so impressed. You can't go wrong with one if you can get it.
