Ford 6.8 fuel milage?

I've been looking at GM gas 3/4 tons and ran across a few F250s with the 6.8. What kind of fuel mileage does the 6.8 get and did it have the problem blowing spark plugs that the 5.4 had?

  • 2004 excursion with about 170,000 miles. 3.73 rear end. I get about 7 or 8 MPG if I tow at 70 or 75 but 8 or 9 if I keep it at 65. Thats with an 8000 LB trailer. I think it might be about 14 MPG not towing but I only use it to tow or site seeing when we're away.
  • I get 12 hwy, 10 city but I also have 4.56 gears. When the van had 3.73 gear (and stock exterior) it did 15+ on the highway at 70 MPH. Towing ranges between 7-9 depending on speed and height of the trailer.

378,000 miles on it, still runs great with no major repairs!

99 V10 CC Long bed Dually... 9.5-10.5 empty.... 7.5 mpg towing

That's pretty close to what I had with my'05 with 4.10 gearing. That's why someone else is getting that now too.
  • My 6.8L gets 12.5 mpg around town in mixed driving and 9 mpg towing. It has been flawless.
  • our 6.8 is doing good so far. before towing--12.6, when towing rite on 10mpg,--motor has 23k on the clock. now its all happy-camping Monaco,montclair--29ft --v-10--
  • I had a 99 with 140,000 miles and only had minor problems with the truck and none with the motor. Mileage will vary so much with speed it is almost worthless to mention it here. I have got as low as 14 and as high as 20 on the highway and a low of 8 and high of 12 towing a 13,000 pound 5er. The V10 is a very good engine.
  • My 02 X gets 14 hwy not towing and 7.5 towing. Not great numbers, but my 32' TT weighs 9200lbs and is 11.5' tall!
The early V-10's had the plug issue. That was fixed late 2001. The newer 3 valves have some of their own issues. Like timing chain tensioner issues and spark plug removal problems due to the design of the cylinder head!
