- jaycocreekExplorer IIFrom 1997 to 2008 Ford acknowledges there may be a problem..That's 11 years of problems since they quit making the 460..
Just say'n...
The new 7.3 gas is to early to see if it suffers from anything..Maybe it will be like the old reliable 460 and maybe it will be like the problematic V-10 and 5.4..To early to say. - jimh406Explorer III

The problem with the new Ford gas engine is,since the old 460 gas, they have had problems with there new engines like the 5.4 and V-10 spitting plugs..For that reason alone,I would personally pass on the first year or two on new Ford engines..
They are only newer compared to your 1997. They haven’t had that issue since 2008.

I never really worry about fuel mileage having owned the big bores(440-454-460) for the last fifty years and my old work truck was always hoping to 5 MPG...
My old work truck never did average 5 mpg.. - spectaExplorer

Nope not gas. Just amazing that it gets the miles per gallon that it does. - ticki2Explorer

This was my new work truck a few years ago and I still drive it when I fill in for the other drivers.
New it was averaging 12.2 mpg and now with over 580,000 miles it still averages over 11.5.
I'd take a new Ford 7.3 over and of the big three diesels.

I've never been able to fuel up as cheaply as I did this summer.
What I found funny is that over the Labor Day weekend there was a piece on the national news wherein some "expert" told the nation that gas prices would be dropping as soon as the Labor Day weekend was over and folks weren't driving so much
Since then our gas prices have risen 30 cents a gallon.
But in Minnesoooota, they’re **** near giving gas away. Cheapest is saw was $1.84 I believe and I don’t think it was corn whiskey.
Even the “expensive” diesel there was about the same price as farm fuel here.
Buying a vehicle based on your local fuel prices, unless it’s a short term deal or you don’t leave the area and know the historical differences, is futile.
At $1.84/gal it’s basically a wash gas is 1/3 cheaper and 1/3 worse mileage.
Out here road diesel is on par with gas, or a bit cheaper. So 1/3 more for gas + 1/2 the torque = no thanks for me and gassers. - spectaExplorer

Every RV, I've owned over the last 40+ years got less than 10 mpg. No matter WHAT it was....Moho, 5er, TC, or TT. The "best" fuel mileage rig is my present 31 year old 460/ZF-5 F350 running just over 10,000lbs loaded and ready to camp. Our S&S runs around 4,500lbs ready to camp and Red has gotten a 12 year lifetime average, with the TC on her of 9.4 mpg and she gets 14 on the highway empty.
I believe the 7.3 gasser will be close to that, but with the 10 speed trans should drive light years better than my old truck.
The new ten speeds are a game changer for gassers. Ten speeds put the engine in the right place all the time, no lugging, no screaming. Really sweet. I haven’t been this excited about a vehicle in a long time. We are loving our new F350 gasser. With the added cost and complexity of diesels, they are getting much harder to justify. We hauled about 12,000 lbs on one trip this summer-no problem at all. I have not missed our previous diesel for one minute. - notevenExplorer IIIMy Kenworth was over dere at another place so I had the opportunity to tow an 40ft 3 axle toyhauler with the old Dodge 5.9 6 spd diesel 200 miles against a fresh 25-35mph breeze 20 degrees off the starboard bow all the way home.
A tousand Farenheit degrees on the pyro a few times cruising 60-65mph.
That outta de-carbon the rings.
And no, it did not do 23 mpg highway. About 10 to the US gallon.
Anyways the same truck has done 10 carrying the slide in camper with a 3500lb 16ft enclosed behind in a head wind like that...
Who knew knocking a hole in the air takes so much power (fuel)?...
I need 3 more overdrive gears that's what I need :D - mountainkowboyExplorerEvery RV, I've owned over the last 40+ years got less than 10 mpg. No matter WHAT it was....Moho, 5er, TC, or TT.
