My father always drove a stick when I was young but when he hit around 70 he gave up on borrowing my 67 F100 with a stick when he needed a pickup. He felt more comfortable putting a small trailer behind his SUV for his hauling errands.
It sounds like you don't ever plan on buying another truck (I am 45 and don't plan on ever buying another truck since I bought my 2006 Duramax). I think an Auto would serve you better in the long run.
I was tempted to buy a stick when I was shopping for a 7.3 Powerstroke because a great number of auto trannies in older trucks have been abused. I bought a high mileage Duramax and felt very comfortable with the longevity of the Allison transmission. The Aisin transmissions behind the Cummins in a Dodge are also excellent over built transmissions that aren't designed to be rebuilt every 100K like the old pickup transmissions.
I would recommend an Allison or Aisin transmission... I don't think you will be disappointed! I love the engine braking feature on my Allison that I had only been able to do with a manual transmission previously.
