Ford Diesel 6.0 really that bad?

I know there is some issues with 6.0, but is it really that bad? Is there something I can do to check or to correct the problem? I was hoping to stay away from heavy duty truck as I really don't need it, but I saw 2007 F250 with 99K miles with asking price of $18K.

YEs they have a poor reputation. You can have the engine "bullet proofed."
Bullet proofing is the term associated with the repairs required to make the engine last. Bullet proofing is a $4-5K process.

This is what I wanted to know. If I need to spend thousands to make it better, then I don't think it is worth it.

    Thanks

And you won't get the resell value out of it either - try telling someone YOUR 6.0 is a good one and you will get laughed at. My 2cents anyways. ...
  • My brother in law has been a Ford Tech for 25 years and when he talks about the 6.0 he always has said they are junk. His words not mine.

My wife was shopping with my daughter for a car at a Dodge dealer and they started talking about Ford diesel trucks because she pulled up with our 4x4 crew cab 7.3 at the time and the salesman told her they wouldn't even take a 6.0 in on trade.

I have never owned one so I don't know first hand but the 6.0 has a bad rep. for sure. and I am 100% Ford diesel trucks.
  • The 6.0 is problematic in that it can have some problems generally fixable for around $4000. It is a requirement to keep up maintenance. Generally if you can find one without a tuner and good maintenance records you can go from there. I would recommend you go to ford truck enthusiasts web site and also the powerstroke forum. Both will give good insight on the engine and also point out what the fixes are. yes I have an 04 and spent the $4K its a good truck. My Brother in law also has a 04 and has had all the issues and fixed many. He just looked at a new truck and said he was going to keep the old one as he was not impressed with the new ones. BTW he has about 150000 on his and one of the problems was that it is a work truck and it was recommended due to where he worked that he change oil every 2500 miles; Never happened but he still runs it hard. Just put in a new intercooler and a couple of other things and said it made a difference. He has towed a skid steer on a tandem trailer so he had a good load on it and he said again no issues.

But like anything else its buyer beware. If serious what you need to do is get a scan gauge or something and take truck out for test drive to monitor the engine parameters, but you will need to go to the right sites to get them. the 2 I recommend are the best.

  • You must have done some research and know their record to some degree.
There will be people on here that will tell you this is a great engine and you will find a lot of anecdotal evidence to the contrary.
Ultimately if you want to believe this is a good move then you will buy.
  • They sell cheap for a reason. Ever wonder why so many get traded at 99k miles? Could it have something to do with the engine warranty being 100k?
