If the "market" is truly changing where Ford "cars" are no longer a wanted commodity, and then if they quit making them, actually no one will miss them now, will they? You never miss something you don't want or never use.
However, the public wants SUV's according to the article. That is what the automobile manufacturers will sell. They go where the market it.
Younger generations have no brand loyalty to anything except themselves. As long as things don't get in their way, they are happy. That's all that matters to them.
It's the older folks that will feel the lost. Those of us who grew up knowing what a "muscle car" was. Driving a sedan with a 440 cubic INCH engine. My 1968 Chevy Nova had a 350 cubic INCH engine in it that would probably run circles around anything being produced today!
And when you think about it, the older generation, hasn't had a "traditional car" with a trunk and an engine under the "hood" since about 1986. With the invention of the mini-van... the world changed!
SUV? A cross between a truck, a station wagon, and the family sedan. The perfect vehicle for today's family. Flip the seats down and it's got enough room to haul a washing machine. Put the seats up and it can hall 7 or 8 people. Make them stout enough and they can tow small trailers. Put a hitch on them and you can insert a bicycle carrier and take the bicycles anywhere. Put a carrier on the roof and you can even pitch a tent up there! The SUV does it all. Why would anyone today want the old style "car" that just sits 4 people and nothing else.
Just like today's younger people, they want everything in one package. Just think what they did to the telephone! Today, you can't get a simply telephone anywhere it seems. And anyone under 45 years old has probably never ever has seen a "rotary" telephone in their lives! Todays telephones meet the demands of society. They are a telephone, a computer, a word processor, connect to the Internet, can do anything any computer can do on the Internet, play games, comes with GPS and maps, and even provide real time true face-to-face streaming from anywhere in the world! Why would AT&T ever want to go back and manufacturer the rotary telephone! There simply is no need for it any more.
Sorry old timer, and I'm in the same category, but there just simply isn't the need for the "family sedan" any more. Times have changed! I'll see you in the car museum where we can reminisce about the "good old days" when we use to drive with no insurance or seat belts.
