Been many threads on this subject of Ecoboost mileage. All I can tell you, is that it depends on many factors. My personal experience with mine has been positive. On a 4300+ mile trip to the Grand Canyon last September, we averaged 11.1 pulling the trailer in the sig below. Got better mileage in the Rockies than we did in the flat Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, etc, with the high crosswinds we encountered. In many cases, you will get better mileage towing in 5th gear. It'll pull it fine in 6th but the mileage drops about 1 mpg doing that. Most of the time, my speed was 63-65 mph.
Around town and general driving, I get an easy 18 mpg in the summer and on summer 87 octane fuel. In cold weather and the crappy winter fuel, that figure drops to around 15+. Highway unloaded 65mph is an easy 22. 70 mph gets me 20-20.5. I have gotten 27+ at a steady 55 mph, no stops and no headwind (and can prove it). That is an unusual circumstance though, and not the norm.
Reliability? No issues here. Except for having to replace 2 right rear tires. That little engine is very torquey. Oh yeah, and that stupid insulation panel under the engine came off 10,000 feet up in the Rockies when the local dealer here didn't reinstall it properly a few days earlier. I threw it in the back, and the Ford dealer in Durango put it back on for me at no charge. Great folks those guys in Durango, nice dealership.
