The base V6's are an interesting lot... For the Ford 3.7, it makes more power than my 1997 Mustang Cobra did. It makes more power than the older 4.6, 5.0, and the 5.4.
Have you ever towed with any of the current base pickup V6s or that 97 Cobra? The Cobra weighs far less than a crew cab pickup empty, let alone towing any weight or unaerodynamic RV, even a popup.
I get that. The point is that even the base engine is more capable than engines of just a few years ago. And those towed the same loads and maybe even more. Again, the 3.7 has more power than the 5.0 that Ford used from the 80's to 1996. And those towed quite large amounts. In the 90's you could get the 300 I6 in an F250, which had lots less power than the 3.7. Yet towed a lot.
I'm not comparing to today's 5.0 which is a hugely different animal than the old 5.0.
It's just interesting that with more power than "HD Trucks" of old we're still low on the tow ratings. Unless the underlying hardware (frame, axles, brakes, etc) are intentionally weakened....
