Unless the engine is a diesel, or a turbo, the manufacturers are using unrealistic numbers to achieve their figures, especially with the smaller engines.
Not picking on Ford, but I have their literature. Their 3.7 is 302 hp at 6500 rpm. So what is the hp at 2500 to 3000, where it will actually be used?
How many will be towing at 6500 rpm, or even 5000 rpm?
I know the V8s are using higher rpm numbers too, but are a little closer to reality.

Everyone uses peak figures - it is the norm and not unrealistic - merely misleading. Yes these new smaller higher compression and higher revving engines are impressive, but folks do need to look at the torque and hp curves to really understand what the motor will put down in the manner in which you want to drive it. THAT is why the tow rating is lower than the old seeminly less powerful engines which were peaking at much lower levels. My Old school 8.1 puts down over 90% of peak torque at 1250 rpm.
