A pickup truck would be way down the list of vehicles I'd choose for a 30K mile per year commute.
I am considering a electric car to get back and forth to work. THey advertized a $139 a month 3 year lease, and considering I can charge at work for free, it will not cost much more except the insurance. There is $3,000 down, so this would add about $100 a month, or less than the $300 a month I am paying now on gas for my 52 mile daily commute.
I have done the diesel thing with a then new 1984 Izusu pickup. The fuel smells, and I no longer like it. I would rather have a auto trans now too.
Sure it would be nice to have a pickyup on the farm. But also consider your commute - if you can drive less than 60 miles per day, then a electric car might be for you! Or of you can charge at work, even a 5 hour 120 volt charge will restore most of the power back into the battery, then a 50 mile each way is easy with several cars. Great incentives to buy a new electric car, not available on the used electric cars.
