- Perrysburg_DodgExplorerWell I bet Fred Diaz had 100% to do with Nissan going with the Cummins. Fred's pitch would have been go with the Cummins 5.0 you will sell a ton of them just look at Ram. Well that's not working out to well for them. You can get a more capable diesel pick up from any of the big three at the same cost and make the same fuel economy to boot.
I don't understand why the big boys didn't go with an in house diesel other then Fred selling them on the Cummins.

OK....but I posted this about two years ago and just posted spy photos of the 3.0 diesel f-150 about two or three months ago along with a story saying Ford said the baby diesel is a go for 2018.
This is old news is all. FCA built a half ton truck with a small diesel and GM and Ford had to fallow suit. GM decided to put their offing in a smaller truck 1/3 ton if you will :@ but I bet they will have a full sized diesel pickup soon. With Fords 10 speed and a 3.0 diesel they will once again be the MPG King.
Had FCA not went with the VM and used the 5.0 Cummins Ford and GM would not have bothered with a small diesel. The 5.0 is not a fuel efficient diesel as Nissan has found out. Ford would still be pushing the Ecoboost as their fuel efficient engine (not saying it is not either).
FCA's 2017 3.0 is tied up in the EPA 2017 testing while GM's mini D-Max has gotten the green light. I'm sure the Feds are looking at the Ecodiesel a lot closer do to the recent claims of cheating in some Cummins trucks and 2014-2016 Eco's. Time will tell how this plays out.

Nissan was well aware of the fuel economy of the 5.0L Cummins, it I was not meant to complete in the mpg wars. - steve-n-vickiExplorerFord offered a small diesel in the ranger in 1984 , I owned one , 5 speed manual , 0 to 60 in 1 week , 1 case of beer payload and 30 mpg with the a/c on

First hot threads on RV.net after release will probably be payload, MPG's, then the mandatory Ike Guantlet test.
Gotta wonder if Ford woulda released this truck if Ram hadn't come out with the EcoDiesel first.
I think all the big 3 were snakebit after developing the baby diesels years ago only to pull the plug on the idea. Add the strict current diesel emission requirements and general advancements in gasoline engines made the decision to go forward again more difficult. Dodge/Ram probably had the most to gain with less to lose launching first baby diesel and it worked out nicely for them. I personally don't think I would choose a diesel in a half ton but having that choice and competition is nice. - PowerdudeExplorer

Because not everyone needs a 3/4+ ton truck. You don't buy a 6 bedroom home if you only need 3 bedrooms do you?
You do if you and your wife wants 4 kids, office and sewing room, and she's smoking hot and ready and willing to breed with you.

I do find it funny that excuses were made about why diesels were not a good idea in light duty pickups after Ram's Ecodiesel came out, and now Ford decides to offer one in the F150. In similar fashion, excuses were made as to why the Ranger was discontinued (slow seller, market dried up, etc.) and now they are planning to bring it back after seeing the success of the new Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. Ford makes incredible trucks, and the F series trucks will probably always be the top sellers in the industry, but I just find it amusing how they change their mind about certain offerings.
Regardless, I think Ford is making a great choice to offer this engine. It will sell very well. - azdryheatExplorerI can see the future thread "Can I tow a 43' toy hauler with my F-150 Diesel? lol
