I read the original post and it never said how fast he was going or what the winds were doing as he crossed the plains from Denver to Chicago. Those factors could make a huge difference. I had a truck that I consistently got 10mpg out of and let my 16 year old son take it on a trip with a fixed tight budget and he got over 12mpg but he drove at night at 52mph.
I do remember reading a review on a Dodge with a Cummins in a major magazine in 1991 that gave 27mpg in a documented test. But, they were probably driving slower and only had about 150hp too.
