I have a friend with an 2000 F250 V-10 and the best mileage not towing is 10 mpg. I would go for the newer 6.2
That mileage number goes up and down depending on user and use. I had a co-worker that has a 99 V10 and wouldn't trade it for the world. Gets almost the same mileage as a 5.4 on the highway (15ish) and towing heavy is 7-10mpg depending on the terrain / speed.
The one thing I have heard a bit about the V10 is guys don't like to physically work on them due to space constraints. However all of the fleet vehicles I worked around all used the V10 and the engine was never the weak point.
