At the train station I park in, when it snows the plow crew is always late so there will be cars in lot and they can't do a very good job. always ends up being ice where you park. plus the lot is in a hill. I saw a person park a RWD pull through one spot into another (down hill) so the nose of vehicle was facing out. This spot was partially covered with ice. driver only used Park, and got onto train.
when we came home that afternoon the vehicle was around 10' out in traffic lane. the one wheel was on blacktop, but other was on ice. since the drive shaft could not turn (parking pawl in place) what happened is with an non limited slip deferential, with drive shaft held in place, if you turn one wheel, the other will spin opposite direction.
so the wheel on blacktop turned correct direction but wheel on ice turned opposite direction as car slid down hill around 10', until it was off the ice.
Had the parking brake been applied this could not have happened.
best part is there was also a parking ticket on the vehicle.
