Yes the Fords have different GVW's. If you buy off a dealers lot look at the stickers. I had a 2014 F350 Lariat diesel CC LB 4x4 SRW that had a 3200# payload. I upgraded from a Cougar XLite to the Montana HC and discovered I was over payload. I went to 2016 Ram 3500 Laramie diesel CC LB 4x4 SRW with a 4018# payload with 12,300 GVW. Ford had 3.55 rear end, Ram 3.42.
Both are very good trucks. Only issue with the Ford was it would stumble at the very worst possible moments...pulling out in traffic. Ford dealer re-flashed it twice, still did it. The Ford seemed to be a higher RPM "hot rod" compared to the low RPM torquey Ram. No issues with the Ram so far at 20,000 miles. Love the Ram exhaust brake.
edit add: My Ford owners manual highly recommended 5W-40 synthetic oil if used in severe duty which included towing. My dealer was about to pour 10W-30 Motorcraft in mine when I stopped them. They didn't have any 5W-40 in stock and weren't interested at all in getting any. I bought Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 from WalMart and took it to them. Be aware.
