Whichever brand you choose don't purchase any brand that has a DPF filter that's not equipped with DEF.
Ford implemented DEF in 2011
Ram implemented DEF in 2013 (excluding CC models).
Can someone kindly explain this theory - I have an '08 CD and no DEF and I am not quite sure what the fluid does - assuming it add's a higher burn in the DPF?
The DEF is a system that cleans the DPF in order to avoid clogging the exhaust which will in turn ruin a motor.
First in line is the DPF. It catches the soot. The engine goes into a regen to clean it via heat.
Next in line is the SCR, this is where the DEF fluid is injected via a dosing nozzle. It is controlled via Nox sensor.
Since the SCR has been used these engines produce less soot because they do not recirculate as much exhaust back into the intake, EGR.
I dont know how many people I talk to think DEF is how they clean the DPF, still done with added fuel burn in a regen process...however its done less and much more efficient.
I have heard that te 2018 Ram will be able to do away with the DPF and just run the SCR.
Well that's cool I'll prob be in the market for a new diesel in a couple years
