- RoyJExplorerIf 6 speeds are somehow superior all Class 8 OTR trucks would be running them. In reality, maybe 1% run 6spd Allisons (mostly city/regional delivery).

PLEASE tell me what benefit an 8 speed would give me towing West Coast with my AISIN/CUMMINS 385/865 at 35k combined. I can tell you dropping a gear manually does NOTHING as it knows what gear to be in.

If you were to hook your unit up behind a new F350 you’d be amazed at the difference a few years, 4 gears and 100 hp make.
It's incredible how blindly brand loyal some folks are. I like my Ram, at the time I bought it I thought it was the best diesel truck for my needs. Had I thought that about the Ford or GM, I'd have bought one of them instead. I'll do the same evaluation next time.
There's no question that my Ram with a 8 or 10 speed, or even a better quality 6 speed like the previous generation Ford or GM transmission, would be a better truck. - blt2skiModeratorRon,
8 so has a 4.3 first gear, 10 in the 4.5 relm, compared to your 3.5ish first gear. Better starting gearing. Less pedal easier starts especially on steep grades.
I have not compared as closely on mid to top gears, possibly spaced closer, so assuming your like me, if I can't pull in OF, but in direct I could go redline, but back off to 2800 or so with past diesels, a taller ratio in trans will allow to go faster up a hill.
No one is saying per say your combo is BAD. But from past experience going from 3 to 4 to 5 to 6 and a 7 sp, when the gears are closer together, yet over all splits are wider, even with the sam motor up front, performance, mpg etc is better.
Think about how much better your current rig is vs last one with the 4 sp auto.

Yet my son with the 2022 Ram HO ,says the same thing comparing his 2016 Ram to the 2022, although it's still as we are discussing 6 speeds . He said totally different performance . As said IMO a 8 or 10 speed will happen with the Ram at some point , then 12V will agree its great. :B - 4x4ordExplorer III

More IS better in this case.
Regardless whether it’s a necessity or not, it would/will/is more efficient.
You might be confusing “doesn’t work” with “would work better.” - HuntindogExplorerRam tends to be a laggard in some areas.
Transmissions being one. When they were the last to do an upgrade before, and will be last this time as well.
In some cases such as fuel pumps, being last has it's advantages. They were last to the CP4 party and used it for the shortest time before dumping it. My only question why they used it at all. My theory is that Bosch assured them that the problems were in the past, and offered them a great deal....And when Ram discovered that the problems were still occuring they dumped it pronto. Just a theory but it makes sense to me. GM after years of covering CP4 failures finally dumped it. Ford after a so so at best record of covering them is still using it. :R
When I was last shopping for my current truck, Ram was crossed off the list only because it was then using the CP4. There is plenty to like about Ram. I was just tired of playing CP4 roulette.... Any time you start it up could be the time it lets go.
And last, I am sure that when Ram finally makes a tranny upgrade, that EVERYONE will think it was a great move. - Cummins12V98Explorer IIIPLEASE tell me what benefit an 8 speed would give me towing West Coast with my AISIN/CUMMINS 385/865 at 35k combined. ^No 12V will just keep touting his old 6 speed slush box. Don’t worry, if Ram ever does pull their head far enough out of their posterior to be able to count gears, and offer more speeds, it will then and only then become a good thing in 12Vs eyes!
ROTFLMAO ????????
Very TRUE!!!!!!
I have to agree with this Ron.
But I feel be it correctly done, or incorrectly time wise, the article does show the difference between an HO and STD power 6.7 Cummins motors. Just as it show difference in other two vs these. Still think it shows positive negative differences between these four motors, whether or not who ever is reading this, likes the results or not.

What engine did they highlight??? Just like Seattle Times and the like newspapers you have to look at the last page to get the story.
Not arguing one bit the numbers just how they were presented. Don't think it's too hard to see that. - Cummins12V98Explorer III

YES I will keep touting the TRUE Medium duty 6 speed AISIN. Do you tow with one??? Do you tow 35k with one West Coast???
Easy to comment on something and say more is better.
