Depends on which vehicle...even what year
Range of types of 4x4 initiation: Vacuum, heated liquid to vapor,
motor, solenoid, etc
Then whether the issue is in the front pumpkin (above mechanisms) or
in the transfer case
Transfer case then has full time, part time, viscous coupling, open diff, etc
Or whether manual or automatic transfer case actuation (automatic has computerized
motors and on mine the shop manual says 4 hours tech time to dial in any replacement
motor assembly)
Could even be the dash switches...they are interlocked to prevent
messing up compound low and/or switching to 4x4 above a certain speed, etc...etc
