Mercedes and some other foreign makers started this several years ago. They just tack it on to the selling price. Nothing is free. A method to support their service department. They have to have a service department anyway. Unfortunate for dealers not everyone returns for service. This is just a forced type of service to level out the ups and downs of the service department budget. I get my vehicle seviced at the dealer anyway so it doesn't much matter. Except I don't put a lot of miles on one of my vehicles so that plan wouldn't be practical for that vehicle. I suppose the next gimmick you will see, since oil changes are free, we only need to change oil every 20,000 miles Vs every 4,000 miles.:B
