Freezing temps and def fluid

I understand that the def tanks on the new 6.7's are heated... If the truck is not used in the winter and just sits , is there something that needs to be done differently? The truck is plugged in , do they BOTH work of that plug ?

  • no DEF freezing is built into the computer to allow thawing time before a CEL is set for no DEF. nice try though.

I bet you could let the DEF freeze and unhook the Def tank heating element and not burn Def all winter.

Ditto. And, unfortunately, it is another of those blizzard nights again tonight. Howling wind, snow, zero visibility.

Another unfortunate is that I must keep my truck outside because of garage limitations. Ah, older house, says two car garage but can only put one vehicle in there. Too low for the truck anyway.

But my last two trucks have been DEF equipped and neither had any problems outside in the winter, irregardless of ambient temperature.
  • My DEF equipepd system has no problems as low as -15F I have seen. I do typically keep in the garage overnight, but it has been left out before, plus cold soak whle at work. There is a slight delay to when I push Start and the engine turns over. After engine is off, DEF is puumped back into the reservoir.

  • Looks like that is the way to store your volume purchase of DEF to get
the best pricing...keep it in the freezer as with most liquid perishables

For those who store their diesel TVs for the winter season...what is the recommended
    procedures for DEF?
  • got to be a pump in the system, freezing is generally not good for pumps and valves.
  • FAQ DEF

    Q. When will DEF freeze ? A. This 32.5% solution will begin to freeze at 12 deg F (-11 deg C). At 32.5%, both the urea and water will freeze at the same rate, ensuring that as it thaws, the fluid does not become diluted, or over concentrated. Unthawing will not cause harm to the product.

    Q. How do I keep the DEF from freezing in the tank of a Truck? A. SCR systems are designed to provide heating for the DEF tank and supply lines. If DEF freezes when the vehicle is shut down, start up and normal operation of the vehicle will not be inhibited. The SCR heating system is designed to quickly return the DEF to liquid form.

    ON EDIT:
Use of the word 'unthaw' in last sentence of first question is not my use.
To be 'unthaw' would mean 'freeze' because when something is 'thawed' to 'unthaw' would mean the opposite.
But in this case.........article is using it to mean 'returning to a liquid state'

Now a days..use a word enough it becomes 'acceptable' even when wrong and when it has no correct usage. Dumbing down of America!
