Fridge 12v Fuse Blowing

So we've got a strange issue where the 12v fuse that our fridge is on keeps blowing. Its a 15amp fuse and I haven't found anything else that is on the circuit but the fridge yet. It seems to blow every couple of days, and I can't find any similarities as to when it blows. Before I though it was only blowing when it changed from 110v to gas or back. But its been on in the driveway for several days and I noticed it has popped twice in last 2 days. Without this fuse it wont start on 110v or gas.

Its still under warranty, I took it in and of course it didn't do it for them.

We're about to head on a long trip, and I'd really like to figure it out before I go.

Any ideas of what to look at or try? Anyone seen something similar?
  • All I can say is get a list of the RV dealers that can do warranty work along your route. Much easier to search it out while at home, than on the road.

I guess I am not to optimistic that the dealer or anyone will figure it out before you leave. My best guess is a pinched wire, that while moving down the road shorts to a screw going into the wall or cabinet someplace. Yet it tripping twice while parked and still - does not make much sense now.

My guess is the dealership already looked at the circuit board, and also checked the amperage to that board. Probably less than 1.2 amps under normal loads.

Also check the light bulbs, they can also draw more power too.

    Fred.
  • I'm guessing that there are indeed several other things on that circuit. You need to do a better job of figuring that out...
  • On our previous HTT the fridge and furnace were on the same fuse.
I had a problem with the fuse blowing. Making a long story short, there was a wiring harness that made a sharp turn around a piece of sheet metal on the fridge. Eventually it chaffed through the wire insulation and would intermittently blow the fuse. I taped the insulation over and added some padding over the sheet metal. Problem solved, PIA to find though.
  • I understand because its under warranty that you may not want to try to fix it yourself, but if you do then I think the place to start is at the fuse panel. Does the fuse that blows have more than one wire attached? If only one wire I would guess that the frig board has a problem. If there is more than one wire, I would unhook the others to see what doesn't work, and also to see if the fuse still blows. If it doesnt blow fuses with the other wires removed then one of them must be the problem and you will need to attache them one at a time to see what circuit has the problem. Finding intermittent shorts can be interesting. I would expect the refer to be on a circuit by itsself though someone else posted that they had the furnace on it also, so there goes that theory. I hope you find it and have a good trip.
  • I would take the fridge off that fuse circuit and install a 15 amp fuse on the backside of the fridge in the access panel area until you can find time to figure it out. Trace the lead with an ohm or volt meter and install the fuse. If it blows again you know it is not in the wire run and is a problem with the fridge.
  • One thing I forgot to mention was that the fridge is on a slide.

I took things apart yesterday. This was the only 12v circuit on the camper that had multiple wires connected. I was lucky to find that there was one wire going to each of the 3 slides, to power the 12v lights and such on each slide. I was able to isolate that the living room slide was causing the issue. I had open spots on the fuse board, so I connected each slide to their own fuse.

It turned out that the wire that fed the slide was pinched pretty badly. I had to take the entire underbelly skin off to get to the wire to replace.

It really isnt a good design to run the wires through the supports of the slides. The wheels inside of there are so close and can easily pinch the wires.
