Fridge in a slide, fan noise

We just purchased a new TT that has a kitchen slide. On our first time out, I immediately noticed an intermediate fan noise coming from the fridge. It was not on all the time and did not have any rhyme or reason why is would turn on or off (at least not to me)

I would assume it is due to the fact that it cannot vent naturally due to being in a slide? Is this correct?

Thanks for the help.
  • We have a Jayco with a fridge in the slide. Behind the fridge is a fan that comes on when the it reaches a certain temp. The fan runs and when the temp goes down the fan shuts off until the temp gets to a certain point then comes back on again.
  • Every RV absorption fridge installed in a slide out should have at least one fan in outside compartment----best to have TWO fans

Fans provide that needed airflow to compensate for the lack of natural draft a roof vent provides.

Typically fans are thermostat controlled ....t-stat attached to far right fin on condenser unit at top of fridge.
Fans installed just above absorber tubes work the best as they pull air in lower vent up thru tubes then push air across condenser fins and out upper vent
T-stat turns fans on at 135*F and back off at 115*F ----condenser fin temp

Course this is all dependent on IF RV MFG. followed Fridge Mfg. installation instructions or left big clearances/dead air spaces???

And my KZ did not have the sheet metal at the top to direct the air flow. After removing a large handful of insulation in the coils, I finished the installation that KZ started. The instructions are in the manual.

I would not buy another with side venting because of the battery drain, poorer performance and fan noise.

This is exactly what you are hearing. On a refrig not in a slide out, there is a vent to the roof that lets out all the heat from the coils. On a slide out refrig, there is no roof vent so they install thermatically controlled fan (fans). Most are easily accessed from the outside upper vent cover and you can add air baffle kits (or make one) to improve air flow. Some have replaced the fans with 'quiet' fans.
  • Our Outback has the same setup and does the same thing. I assumed it was the cooling fan as well.
  • If you go to Mouser.com you can buy cooling fans for computers that are quieter. There are 586 pages of fans here's one. Might be quieter.
