Front of camper is delaminating....best fix??

I have a 2011 Crossroads Zinger 19RDS that I picked up earlier this spring/summer. When I got it, I noticed a little bit of waviness on the front of the camper, but after talking to some people....figured that it was just from the heat/cold and really wasn't anything to worry about...it was barely noticeable.

After I got the trailer home, I got up on the roof and noticed a few cracks in the sealant up in the front where water was probably getting it....but I repaired it all, so it's nice and water tight now.

Fast forward a few moths, and now over the last week or two the front of the camper went from just a little wavy, to "what the heck is going on!". It looks horrible now.....not sure if it's from the high humidity and heat we have had here in Missouri the last month or what, but it just looks horrible now. The thin fiberglass (or whatever it is) sheet in the front feels like the glue has let go and it's coming off of the solid board underneath it. Everything feels nice and solid (no soft spots), but the thin fiberglass covering it's just free to flex and move around on it's own.

I don't think it's a structural issue...just more of a cosmetic issue. Everything else on the front it solid, not signs of water damage inside, or under the front storage areas. Did a water leak do this, or was it just crappy glue that was used at the factory?

What's the best way to fix this? Or should I just leave it? I'm not afraid to tackle this project on my own.......

Is this normal for a trailer that's only 5 years old?? There is no delamination anywhere else on the trailer...it looks perfect.

Thoughts?

  • Sorry you have this issue.

But look on the bright side: your TT has an airbag built in!

Sometimes the best fix involves dynamite . . . or a good belly laugh. Maybe both.

A BIT of waviness?! :E Yikes, I'd call that SEVERE delamination and wouldn't have touched this puppy with a ten foot pole! :E As to what to do now, without an investment of thousands $$$$ to have that front wall replaced about the only thing you can do is live with it as it is, especially since you now seem to believe you've solved the leak issue that caused this problem in the first place.
  • img,
delamination of Filon (thin fiberglass skin) is where the glue lets go that bonds the layers. It can occur from heat on areas where the filon is bent , like a nose cap but usually is from water intrusion . You really only know if you open it up and look . Maybe a mold test would be of help.
The RV has very little value with visible delamination.

To have it repaired in todays market is approx. an $8,000 job due to the time it takes to dry things out while occupying a repair bay.
A tree branch fell on mine while at a CG and my homeowners Ins. paid for it. That's how it worked for me.

Go to youtube, there are many videos of trailer delamination projects, viewing them will give you a good idea of what happened and what is involved in making a repair. If it was due to water intrusion, you will get to see the potential mold problem that you dont see from the outside.
  • The front of your TT looks like our 2011 Crossroads. If you go through a large RV park you will see lots of these situations on RV's built about that time. We were told that our delam began with excessive heat on the front cap (it sat on a dealer's lot in SC facing west for over a year)and then the moisture began to seep in. We did not see any evidence of leaking inside either. We sold it at a considerable loss.
