Hi. Many of the previous comments, I have followed too. I have spent considerable time in cold and snowy weather. A couple of years ago, I too grew tired of the ESPN battle with my own power cord. With that I took drastic action by cutting off the cord, drilling a hole (the size of the power cord) through the bay's outside wall. I did this to keep from needing to open and close the compartment door, during cold weather, since I use my camper more than most people. Because of this I too was worried I would break something off, inside this area of my Lance, with the continuance of pulling and shoving the heavy power cord.
Since I am familiar with doing this type of work, I just cut the cord myself and picked up the needed plugs at Lowes/Home Depot. I also have new ends on to facilitate my Honda 3K generator and Solar/Battery Bank (numerous pigtails for various scenarios). Bottom line don't be concerned about cutting the cord and and by passing the compartment, as Lance now has a plug on the outside to plug a power cord too. Also, the Factory pass through hole, I wanted to stop the cold air infiltration, so I picked up one of those plumbing plugs (Oatey) that is used to seal off a waste pipe and placed it in the hole. Keeps road debris/water/snow from coming into the compartment too and another reason to plumb your cord through the side of the compartment while you have the end cut off.
