This is something I worry about also, I did find this you tube vid about this camper falling over. The camper jack may have been weak, wind or some other outside force could have contributed to the camper falling over. This guy seems to think that the camper being loaded with weighted items in the bed area was the cause. The video starts pretty slow, but if you can stick with it, he finally gets to the idea of the video".Uprighting The Fallen Truck Camper" is the title of the video. I would guess there are others.
Just something to check out.
I don't even have to look for the video.
The jack(s) collapsed, period.
That is NOT NOT NOT the camper tipping over using the front jacks as the fulcrum point. The camper fell down; it did not tip over.
Show me a camper that is tipped over with the rear end sticking up in the air, and the front jacks intact. You can't. It has NEVER happened.
I really need to stop reading this thread.
I dont think anyone is being silly but cautious. I can only speak for myself, I dont have an engineering degree but I consider myself to be pretty sharp and extremely mechanically inclined. What I can tell you is with my 91 Sunline that 60 or so percent of the weight is in the front drivers corner.Fridge, propane, sink, domestic water. The rear has a 10lb heater and an empty waste tank.(I can feel this severely in the manual jacks when lifting it) The AC unit is somewhat centered front to back but is set more towards the passenger side I'm assuming to balance it out. There are so many different floor plans so this varies for everyone. We have already had one gentleman state that his one camper will teeter so its not impossible.
This does lean me towards not using the jacks when unloaded for any more then stabilization. I can see where they could shear a pin or blow out a bevel gear. It also makes me want to try to keep the front a few degrees higher then the rear.
I'm really surprised as to the different responses to the thread and enjoyed it.
If anyone has more to add from their experiences please do. I'm finding it interesting and entertaining.
Thanks!
