Sounds more like a poor job of packing the bearing or a problem bearing that destroyed the axle. I don't know as much as many folks about axles and trailers, but I do know that some manufacturers don't use quality Timken bearings etc, and will use cheaper parts. I don't think anyone on this page, including the OP knows why the bearing failed. Do you?
I can guarantee, Dexter, and AL-KO have always used quality bearings, hubs etc all the time that I used them over many decades. AL-Ko is the old Hayes company.
