Grape Solar AC/DC portable refer/freezer

I posted this in the TC forum as I figured you folks are the ones that would probably use this type of refer most.

Does anyone know anything or heard anything about the Glacier 1.1 cu ft Solar G**** AC/DC units? They are steel cased with wire racks for the inside.

I'm looking to get a refer, I know about the ARB, Engle but I was looking for something a little less expensive. I know you get what you pay for but there is such a thing as riding on your name and charging more because of the perceived idea of better

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

OH EDIT: Boy the censor is a little over bearing. The word that has all of the **** marks is with a "G" and then the other 4 letters. So the censor takes out the last 4 even when tied into different word. Anyway the maker is a solar company in WA that has these. It has been mentioned on here before so don't know why it is being blocked now. It is a type of fruit guys not a sexual thing. The letters are G and then R then A then P then E for the company name.
  • Just thought I would check back in and let everyone (if they really care) what I went with.

I ended up getting a Dometic CF35. I really liked the ARB but for the location I wanted to put it they were just to big In the same size the ARB was about 3 or 4 inches longer than the Dometic. So that is what I went with. On Amazon the Dometic good reviews overall. I ended up getting it from PPL as they were lower than any other place I could find with free shipping. I received it in 4 days including the day I ordered it, so was happy with the delivery

I unboxed it and plugged it in and turned it on and set it for 37* and it was cooled down to that temperature in about 4 hours. This is after I brought in in from the garage where the temp was in the upper 70* range.

I pretty impressed with so far so time will tell.

Thanks everybody for all you input I appreciate it.
  • IIRC, I had a "Glacier" refrigerator in my dorm in college. It was one of those cheap little compressor models made overseas. Not real well made but it kept the beer, er, I mean SODA, cold enough and held up for four years. I gave it away to some friends several years later because I had no place to keep it. Now I wish I had it back.
  • Never heard of Glacier, but Truckfridge is another good one and they tend to be priced a bit better.
  • I did a search over on ExPo (Expedition Portal) and came up empty. The only discussions I found were people asking if anyone had experience with it, but no one mentioned using one.
  • Eric, thanks for your thoughts and comments.

I know what you mean about the Engel. I don't know where it is made. I also have heard a lot of good comments about ARB but I found out that they are also made in China.

I need to look at the Engel some more and see if they have one that well fit the space that I want to put it into.

Home Depot and Cabelas also sells the Glacier brand. I also found the manual and read through it. Again like you I could not tell if they used the Danfoss compressor or not. I guess I could call the Grap.e Solar and ask them about it.

TO ADMIN. Thanks for fixing my title so people would be able to know what company I was talking about.
  • Did some digging and found it at Walmart for $445 and then the Manual at Home Depot.

First thing I notice is it is a DC compressor fridge so it has the compressor which is a must for freezing temperatures. Can't find out if it has the highly reputation of a Danfoss Compressor or a knock-off.

Did find it is made in China. Not bad or good, but I try to stay away from mechanically things made there. My daughter worked for a company which had electrical tools made in China. The Chinese had a habit of changing designs without permission because they found a way to make it cheaper, a lot of time which shortened the reliability of the product.

Did find a couple of reviews which gave it good rating. One person said it pulled 1.5A which would be in line for the Engel.

For me, I've heard too much Good about the Engel to stray from them if I was in the market for this type of unit.
