Yep, that happens. Sorry you had a bummer at the Caverns. It is a nice place. I have lived less than 5-6 miles from the Caverns since 1978 and have never been through the whole tour. Several years ago, actually before I moved here, we tried the tour and half was closed due to flooding. My family has been several times, but I have never been back for the tour.
As for your buddy the Copperhead, I have lived in north Florida since 1971 and never seen one. Rattlesnakes, moccasins and coral snakes- yes.
Looks like you had a great trip even if you did get bummed in Marianna.
