Garage door opener as a lift for a camper shell

I have an old garage door opener that I was thinking of using as a lift for a camper shell. I'd attach it to a block and tackle to amplify the pulling force. The problem is I have no idea how much ...

Harbor Freight has several AC powered winches that should do the job. They probably cost less than the parts that you would need to modify the opener and would definitely be MUCH SAFER.
