well, only in colder climates :) - 6dot6Explorerim a diesel guy. im not saying gas motors suck or any of that. I have a gas beater I just drive to work and back. weekends and towing I use my dually. we will never come to an agreement on the perfect truck. that's why there are so many on the market. what ever works for you...fine, drive it. it is nice when you can spin all fours in the rear with a 9k trailer behind you going up hill. I have to remind myself to take it easy sometimes. :)

Do a little tuning on the diesel and then there is no comparison, none, notta. And yes it will hold up to it with no problems.
I didn't think I would have ever said this but I MISS MY 6.0! My service truck is down right now so I am driving a truck that is a little lighter and also has a gas 5.4 and I'm telling you it sux! It will not hold OD @ 75 MPH on the interstate. It also will not hold OD on the two lanes I drive around here. I do have to admit though, it sounds good, but it sounds like I'm racing at every stoplight.:S
Mine holds O/D just fine at 75 and the two lanes.:h
Besides, what's the obsession with O/D? There's 3k more rpm available for multiplying torque at the tip of your boot.:B
Your truck don't weigh 11,000# either. I know you are going to say that most trucks don't weigh that and you are right but this is a "tow vehicle" thread and when you hook weight behind your gasser you can not hold a gear.
I know all about the multiplying of the torque. I think a real truck should be able to run at GVWR and do easily without all of the gear changes. I'm not asking it to tow something, hell it's not even at it GVWR and at interstate speeds it should be able to hold high gear. This truck has 4:10's with short 16" tires, it should not have to multiply torque to hold it.
The obsession with OD is that I get tired of hearing it run at 3500- 4000 RPM's just pulling it's own weight. With my sick-o , which is a 1000+ more pounds, cruise in OD at around 2250 and nothing but wind noise. Just a lot more comfortable atmosphere on an hour and a half ride to work at 6am or any time for that matter;) - Airstreamer67Explorer

Real motors don't have liquid fuel either, but Watts? - HannibalExplorer

- TacoExplorerYeah they pretty much pull the same as far as speed or acceleration. The gas engine will use more fuel in the process and it will turn higher rpm.
Any full throttle hill climb test with a heavy trailer between gas and diesel I have ever seen has always been within a couple of mph. - wintersunExplorer IIThe GM gas engines and its Duramax engines put our roughly the same horsepower but the diesel has nearly double the foot lb of torque. Big difference in acceleration, ability to pull a grade, and especially in engine braking (even without the exhaust brake enabled) on a downgrade. The diesels are also stronger (have to be) and so the maximum tow rating is higher for the diesel powered trucks.
With a trailer load over 8,000 lbs. I would want the diesel for these reasons, regardless of the tow capacity of a gas powered truck. The extra cost of the diesel engine and special transmission is part of the price to be paid for towing a heavy trailer.
