Op, this is not harping ON you, it's to help you grasp this so you can conquer many projects. I'm beating it but.......
You did get the right answer. The answer that most of us gave you is correct. You would look at the nut that you want to loosen. No one would look at the part from the backside. You wouldn't look at the back of a wheel from the brake drum side and say turn it clockwise. If you were explaining to a parts guy at an auto parts store which way you had to loosen a wheel nut to get it off, he would absolutely think that you were looking at it. So are you looking to take the large nut off or looking to unscrew the regulator or whatever that is. If you are looking to unscrew the regulator from that big nut you would turn the regulator to the LEFT.
To look at the back side of the valve puts you 2 components away from the item you are concentrating on. You asked about the large nut and you concentrate on the large nut.
If I have a gas valve or an hydraulic control valve with a dozen fittings and elbows on it I would look at and loosen the one I'm looking at from IT'S side. If you look at the large nut from the valve side, you are first looking at the small nut. But not only that you have to imagine looking through the valve. When you cant climb up on top of the stove and look at the fitting you are taking off, you have to visualize being there and you would turn it to the left.
Picture a square hydraulic valve with fittings on all sides. You wouldn't look at one of the fittings on the left side and say turn it away or right side turn it toward you.
If you wanted to disassemble something you look at the item not through another item. You are looking AT the large nut. If you did want to look at the valve and the back side of the small fitting it would be left. But you wouldn't normally think of turning the gas valve to the left. You would look at the large nut and the valve doesn't turn, the nut turns. Visualize the part you are concentrating on from the end it comes off of. If you wan to remove the small nut from the large nut, turn it to the left. If you want to spin a whole stove or oven round and round hold the large nut still and turn the stove to the LEFT.
Maybe I and a whole lot of other mechanics have been visualizing things wrong for 40 years but I can guarantee no one would be saying turn it to the right. They would say tell the guy to look at the nut not the valve.
Anyway. You will do fine and just keep learning. Soap leak test all connections in the system when you are done.
The op there are what they call left hand threads on some items like rv pol fittings vs acme. They are or were sometimes used on wheel nuts, Small engine clutch assemblies and some flywheel nuts long ago.
