Gas Water Heater Burning

I have used my gas (only) water heater for years without issues. Now when I turn it on there is a plastic burning smell and I've noticed the outside of my trailer where the exhaust is discolored from (what I assume) is black smoke.

Nothing appears fishy when I look behind the access panel on the outside.

???

The only time mine did that was when I was almost out of propane. Filled the tanks and end of problem. Good luck,Bill

I think this may be part of the issue too. Thanks

Is it an Atwood or a Suburban?

Atwood has an adjustable air shutter...sooting is caused by too much fuel/not enough air....open air shutter until flame is BLUE and has a slight roar

Suburban does not have an air shutter...fuel/air ration is dependent on flow os gas thru orifice and system pressure
Clean gas orifice and burner tube
(Soak orifice in alcohol and then blow thru it.no pressured air or poke anything thru it)

Combustion/exhaust chamber needs to be 'chimney sweeped'
Push a wire thru combustion side and out exhaust side...tie rag to wire then pull back thru 'sweeping' debris/nests etc out

Thanks. I adjusted the shutter and sweeped it out. Seamed to help.

  • Time to clean the burner tube? Do any wires look burnt or melted? Agree with above watch it as it’s running with the door open.
  • Did you try operating it with the outside panel off to see what is happening inside?
