My buddy had a 99 (I think the last year of the old 454) 2500 Suburban, and he towed a 11,000 pound trailer with it. I would not worry with such a light load on the Suburban, it is made for larger loads than you have. Even the rear axle is rated and used in dually applications with a 23,000 + GCVWR!
It might be a U-joint to? Or I thought that I had a bad u-joint when my then new 1994 work truck had 24,000 miles on it. New tires did the trick, and the sounds went away. Ran great for another 10 years, and then I left before the truck was retired. Last time I drove it had over 95,000 miles on it.
