GM 6.6 gas

Who's towing what with the new 6.6 gas from GM. How does it do in mountains, how much weight are you pulling, what kind of mileage towing and empty. You all have the real answers, I thank you for your input.

  • I had a 2020 Silverado 3500 regular cab dually with the 6.6 gas. I had it for more than a year. I never pulled in mountains, but I did pull a hill from a stop at the bottom with over 15k pounds without a problem. Fuel economy was as stated earlier.

I never felt that the 6 sp transmission impacted performance for me. I have also driven a 2021 3500 Crew with the Duramax. And yes, it did better.

Not sure what I will order after I tow my travel trailer next week to Iowa with my van. I expect that the comfort and trailering capabilities of the new trucks will convince me to place the order.

I would wait untill they fix the bugs in the ford. Guy at work bought one and it was in the shop for like 2 months, he just got it back. One sensor after another kept failing. Maybe bad luck , but who knows.

I think we're talking about the GM 6.6 here

Well I did post on that first, maybe you read the comment above?
  • I driven one bobtail and it was a nice truck. Bout what you’d expect.
But if you’ve been truckin for 38 years, I believe you already know the answer.
Your LML will still blow the doors off it, towing. And it is the least powerful worst trans of the big 3 gassers.
    And the Chevys are ugleeee!

  • I love my old Chevy, and was waiting on Chevy to come out with the 6.6, but after reading/watching reviews, and a test drive I was very disappointed. They really messed up only putting the 6spd in it.
The Ram performs better, and the new Ford 7.3 does even better. I’m waiting on all these crazy prices to normalize, and then will get the Ford.
  • My camper is light. Way too light for the 2500. But it tows a world better then the 2012 sierra 1500 i had with tow package. The sierra had no power up steep grades,l and i think the variable cylinder thing hampered the power. The 2500 can pass things. Its huge inside and out. Hitch camera is an upgrade for me. I get 12 mph towing like 5500 lbs, and the truck is usally loadded up pretty good( 3 bikes, 2 scooters, table, 2 20 lb propane bottles, 2 creats of wooden levelers, cooler with 2 cases of drinks in it, etc. )I get 14 to 18 highway going like 80ish not towing. I have the 2000 chevy hd 2500 gasser.
  • Hoping to order one next year,so I'm very curious how they pull the hills. Following here
  • artie2908,

that's the exact info I was looking for. With 10k more for a diesel and diesel being $.30 more a gallon I'm starting to think like you... just not worth it. My trailer tips the scale just under 10k pounds. so my tow mileage might not be as good as yours.
Thanks again for your info, be safe out there.
  • I have a 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 CCSB with the 6.6 gasser. (six speed trans, 3.73 rear) I pull a Airstream Flying Cloud 28 foot trailer. The trailer was weighted on a CAT scale, ready for the road at 7,000 pounds. Towing I get 10-11 mpg, with reg.gas, over varied terrain, covering over 5,000 miles. I am very happy with the performance of the gas engine. Plenty of power. My previous truck was a 2011 GMC Duramax diesel. comparing the two, the diesel definitely pulls stronger and got 12-13 mpg pulling the same Airstream. I went to gas mainly because I couldnt take the problems of the diesel emissions anymore, and saved $10,000 going with a gas engine. Can buy a lot of fuel for $10,000 I would buy the 6.6 gas engine again. empty 15-16 mpg. If I get on the interstate and baby it I can get 17 mpg hope that helps
