I am pleased with my 6.0 2500 HD pickup. it does all that I need done. And being flex fuel is a distinct plus. Curren price today for E85 in my area is $1.27. Regular is $2.07. My 2500 averages about 10 mpg on the stuff, so at the current price that is about 12 cents a mile. For a diesel 2500 to match that 12 cents a mile, it would have to average (all miles, 25 mpg. Not likely. On road trips (empty) on E85, my 2500 has averaged about 13.8 mpg. A diesel 2500 would have to average 30+ mpg just to break even on the per mile fuel cost. Again, not likely.
If the 6.6 isn't flex fuel also, then I will not be interested. Keeping my 6.0 2500 for a long, long time is not a bad thing for me. No need to buy the latest stuff just for the ooh aah factor.
How does yours compare on E85 vs regular? Is it worth while to run it?
Average for all miles on regular has typically been in the 13-14 mpg range on regular. On a road trips, 17-18 mpg on regular.
On E85, the average is about 10 with about 13.8 average on road trips.
Regular is going to $2.07 near me now. At 14 mpg average on the stuff, that equates to about 14.7 cents a mile fuel cost.
E85 is gong for $1.27 near me. At 10 mpg average on the stuff, that comes out at about 12.7 cents a mile fuel cost. A 2 cent per mile savings.
Regular on a road trip at 17.5 mpg comes out at about 11.8 cents a mile.
E85 on a road trip comes out at about 9.2 cents a mile fuel cost.
So all the way around, E85 has been a better value for my use. For everyone else, prices vary in different regions and such so it might not be as good of a value or just plain not worth it. But during the period several years ago when gas hit $4 a gallon and diesel hit $5 a gallon, E85 stayed about $1.50 lower than gasoline. For the last two years, E85 in my area has been 80 cents to a dollar lower than gasoline consistently.
This is why I am so sold on flex fuel vehicles. I like being able to use a smorgasbord of fuel choices..... E0, E10, E20, E30, E50, E85.... based on what has the best price and value. Having a gas engine that limits me on fuel choices is not what I want anymore.
