GMC 3500 Crew Cab Rough Ride

I recently purchased a 94 GMC 3500 and was wondering if these trucks had ride quality issues? The truck has 313K miles all over the road pulling a horse trailer and runs great. My only issue is that the rear suspension is very stiff. I had a 79 several years ago and it rode nice but not this one. So is this normal or do I need to start looking for a problem?
  • Welcome to heavy duty trucks! LOL It has to have stiff springs to carry big loads. When empty, it will be like no springs at all. Especially the older ones. Normal. Either get used to it, or sell it.
  • no its not lifted its all stock height and the shocks don't look that old. I don't have a huge trailer to haul I just wanted something to pull one if I ever needed to
  • My F450 rides so rough that I can run over a dime and tell you what year it was minted. When I have 3,000 pounds of pin weight over the rear axle, however, it's as smooth as a Cadillac. And as an added bonus, I'm still 5,000 pounds under my max cargo capacity.

I will check the tire pressure and see what that is but I'm not sure if that is the problem. The front is smoth the problem is the rear seems to hop almost like a rigid suspension. When I drive the rear of the truck almost bucks on some roads. The ride height seems ok but the overload spring is touching the perch in the rear. I can't imagine the rear any higher as I'm using an 8 inch drop hitch now.

How many miles on the shocks? Is this thing lifted?

I have a 93 heavy 3/4 ton and like to drive the truck better than my 06 dmax.

  • What tire pressure do you have in the tires? Most people think that you need to run MAX pressure on side wall of tire. What does door label say?

I have a F250 and door says 50 for front tires, but side wall ways 80. If I used side wall, I would be about 65% over inflated, which would make for a very harsh ride.

Rear calls for 70, they would be about 15% over inflated if I went max.
  • First look at what you have. A truck that is almost 20 years old. It has 313 THOUSAND miles. That truck is pretty much worn out in the chassis department. Plus it might have the HD package, thus the harsher ride. Put like 2500 lbs of weight in the box and see how it performs. My Dodge HD is a rough rider, unless i have about 1000 lbs on board.
