Going from diesel Excursion to gas pickup?

So I tow an Open Range 325B with our Excursion diesel and I am thinking about going to a pick up and gas at that. What should I be looking at? I also tow a large boat that weighs around 11000 lbs. The boat only gets towed about 2 times a year. Can I get away with a gasser? What truck do you guys recommend? Oh and I am looking used. Maybe 3-5 years old.

The Ram with the 6.4 Hemi would be my first choice although they are newer than the 3-5 year old range you were shooting for.

  • Hmmm. Good info. I may start looking into the Ford or Chevy in gas. What about those years in diesel? Which is better? I had a Ford 6.7 diesel that was awesome, I just couldn't justify the payment!!! This is my primary reason for looking at something a little older and gas at that.
  • GM 2007.5+ 6.0L/4.10
    Ford -2010 V10 or 2011+ 6.2L/4.30
Ram - when did the 6.4L come out? I don't like the Ram trans gearing compared for Ford/GM 6-spds. The 6.4L makes up for it, but older 5.7L - blah even with 4.10 axle.

I guess in the 3-5 year old vintage, capable of hauling 11K, your choices would be a Ford 6.2 or 6.8. GM would be the 6.0. Don't know if the Ram's 5.7 would be OK? Maybe?

I'm close to 11K and my 6.2 with the 6 speed pulls as good as my 6.8 with the 5 speed did. They are built to rev, so let them do what they are designed for. If looking at Ford, I would recommend '11+ with the 6.2. It gives you the 6 speed tranny that has lots of shifting options.
  • If you tow in Florida for the most part, I think you will find some of the newer gas rigs will perform every bit as well or better than the Ex, depending upon the motor and brand you choose. Especially if you can get on of the 5 or 6 sp tranny options that have come out in the more recent years.
