Going to be a camp host--have questions.

Concerning the HWH. Regardless of the propane supply situation, I only turn it on for showers then turn it off.

I believe no sewer will be your biggest problem unless they provide pump out service. I would suggest you get a second propane tank so you can use one until it runs out and then have one on hand to replace it while you get it filled. how long it lasts is hard to estimate due to unknown weather conditions. Another problem will be battery life unless you have a generator. Without any hookups it will be a challenge that I would not want to take on but to each his own. Good luck

Thanks for the replies. They have ordered a generator, should be here this week. 2nd Propane tank is a good idea, we'll pick one up.
They will have to haul the camper in to town to dump the tanks. Not an ideal situation, but they are young and adventurous.

We full time in a TT and a 5 gal tank will last about 7 days.

If I was staying the whole summer, I'd invest in a water caddy and a 12V pump. Probably have a sewage tote available, too.

If it isn't trouble, I'd look at getting a 100lb cylinder for propane. I used to do this for deer camp and it was a lot easier and cheaper than carting/filling 20 lb. cylinders.

A generator is good, but then they have to get a supply of gasoline. Why not check out a 200-300 watt solar set up to keep the batteries charged.

The first thing I'd invest in, is a solar charging system. It will help keep the batteries charged, and cut down on the use of a generator.

A sewer caddy would be so much easier than packing up and hauling the trailer 22 miles into town. It would be a must for me.

Have extra cylinders on hand. I'd have 2 extra just in case. For me, running heat 3 nights, and using my stove a handful of times kicked a 20lbs cylinder. That was withoutusing the hot water heater or fridge. I'd say if you have to run the heat at night, 2 tanks would last about a week, so I'd have 3 total tanks.

If they can play out meals, fuel and sewer requirements so that they need just a weekly trip to town, it would be ideal.

Any former hosts have advice regarding hosting?

Ya,be nice and friendly and set the example on a clean camp and generator noise and pet care(picking up poop/on a leash). Usually someone will check on the camp host and bring stuff like propane and I would assume a hand held radio for emergencies is supplied to check in/report etc.

I'm a little confused by the propane tank numbers being used. In the original post, you say 5 lbs -- pounds? I assume that is a typo?

Also, I have 30lb (pounds) tanks on my camper. I have not seen the term "gallon" used for propane tanks.

I hope they are getting a quiet generator? A "contractor" generator will get tiresome in about 10 minutes.

Have they checked the regulations for gray water on the ground? To minimize TT hauling into town, I'd be doing dishes outside, brushing teeth outside, peeing on trees, etc - IF IT'S ALLOWED.
