The way I see it, it's all about "odds".   As my old Dad would often say, "every thing is a calculable risk".
Here's an example....new client showed up at the barn last night.  Two horse bumper pull trailer....just got in here to the midwest from California.   Pulled it behind a ecoboost f150.....so I got curious after they left and looked at the tires.  2009 date code carlisle ST tires.   And yep, he made it, no problem from the west coast to here. 
Point is, I'm not silly enough to say he was for sure doomed to a roadside failure.  But what I "am" willing to say, is that his odds of having a failure were greater than if he had "new" LT tires.
That is all I am trying to point out.....there are certain choices we can make that may in fact improve our odds.
