Grand Design Imagine 2950rl

I am in the market for a new tt. I currently have a Jayco Jay Feather 242. I am very happy with Jaycos product. I have had vitually no problems with the unit in the 6 years I have owned it. I am looking for a larger unit now. A couples unit that is half ton towable. Although I like jaycos product they do not seem to have a couple unit, rl or re, in the half ton towable segment.

I have been looking for a new unit for 2 years and believe I have finally found a unit we would he happy with. The Grand Design Imagine 2950rl fits all my needs, weighs less than 7000lbs and appears to be well designed and built. The only thing that makes me a little nervous is the age of the Grand Design Company. They have only been in business for around 4 years. Being a young company it is virtually impossible to find reviews on their products.

Does anyone have any experience with their products or customer service?
Any input is appreciated.
  • Numbers to consider. My F-150 4x4 has a towing capacity of 9500 lbs, a max cargo on the door jamb of 1411 lbs.

My Dutchmen Lite is advertised at 5004 lbs and 460 lbs tongue weight. Across the CAT scales loaded for the road it weighs 6400 lbs and has almost 700 lbs on the tongue.

So in the real-world my F-150 sees 700 lbs of tongue weight, 600 lbs for two adults and a dog, add another 100lbs or so for the cap and camp gear putting me at or a bit over the max cargo limit.

Now run your figure starting with a 7000 lb TT.

I have had my Grand Design 5th wheel for 2 plus years. This company is Awesome. Their Customer service is excellent even after the 1 year warranty. I would buy another one for sure!
  • That seems like a lot of trailer for a half ton. You may be way ahead of me on this, but just in case.....don't make the same very costly mistake that I did. That is, to believe the towing/payload capacities claimed by the truck manufacturers. They are as inflated as gas mileage claims, in my opinion.
My truck's GVWR is 6900 lbs. Dry weight is 6000 pounds, leaving just 900 lbs for passengers, gear, AND tongue weight. With a tongue weight for my TT at 1,000 lbs (weighed by me), you can see that my half ton is way overloaded. Also, the supposed 10,000 lbs of towing capacity greatly exceeds what the Trailer Life Towing Guide lists for my truck (7900 lbs). I believe the latter, based on my experiences. Lastly, the weight of the trailer as advertised is the DRY weight, and does not include gear, food, water, and upgrades (spare tire, slide out covers, ladder etc.). You'll need to include that weight when comparing it to your truck's towing capacity. My advice...1) weigh your truck on a scale, compare it to the allowed GVWR, and see how much you have left over for tongue weight. 2) Check the Trailer Life Towing Guide to see what it says about your towing vehicle's capacity.
  • We just bought a 2017 Imagine 2800BH. It is a very nice unit, and GD is selling a lot of them.

I considered the 2950 and looked at them very closely. The only downside with the double slides is that you cannot get into the galley.

The 2950 comes with a huge pantry so that is very nice as well.

I think the biggest negatives I have are the lack of 12 volt outlets, small gas bottles, the lack of HDMI from the entertainment center, and the rather thin mattresses.

I have not read many negative comments about these trailers and have only found one or two that had some serious complaints. My two problems are minor: one drawer not having a lock installed; the TV antenna dripping water, but it took a Louisiana deluge while driving 65 MPH to reveal it...not repeatable when stopped!

It makes one heck of a mancave.
  • GDRV was founded by executives who had many years of experience with other well-known RV manufacturers. In the short time they have been in business, they have developed quite a customer base and established a reputation for customer service second to none in the RV industry. You can interact with about 5,000 Grand Design owners over on the GD forum (not owned or operated by Grand Design):

We have been full-timing in our Grand Design Reflection fifth wheel for a year now and are quite happy with it. Have we had some issues? Yes - every new unit will have issues. Grand Design has stepped up to the plate and taken care of us in a way we were never cared for by Forest River.

  • Thanks for the reply. I am looking for double slides in the rear to maximize space. Have not totally ruled out the white hawk but really would like more livng space.
  • Are you sure that this wouldn't work for you?
