However as a member of the old bladder/prostate club I would probably plant my face in the dirt on my down.
Good article on the OX5. - sstanExplorer

Roof Top Tents have a lot of advantages over ground tents. Setup is fast, they open like a clam shell with the poles in place the pad and sleeping bag is inside ready for use. Breaking camp is just as easy, it's like closing a book. There are a lot of advantages to having the tent elevated; no dirt inside, not pitching a tent in the mud, stable in the wind. Creepy crawly things don't come inside either. Plus the feeling is like sleeping in a tree house with a good view.
Yes there are tradeoffs as already mentioned, they are more expensive than a ground tent. The ladder thing too if you are a member of the small bladder club.
We like ours and use it with the Jeep when camping where the TC can't go. - whazooExplorer

D,
Since you were taking the picture you can be forgiven for your mistaken information. I was merely explaining to the group how impressed I was with the new submersible TC units I had just seen being run through their paces on the "overland/underwater" course. The three headed snake was merely incidental to the story, as I had spotted it wrapped around the naked man's torso just before reaching the test track. And BTW, I was so distracted by the spectacle I did not get a good ID on the birthday suit wearing fella - it could've been Bryan or Dave, but I was trying not to look too closely.
I just wanted to set the record straight.

Aha, there it is. :B I was so confused before, now it's as clear as mud.:h Boy I can't wait for the next campfire stories. :W - seldomseensmithExplorer IID,

Eric - Camp__Forrest__ExplorerI like the rooftop tents too. I don't like being on the ground. I wish they were cheaper because I could see using it rather than sleeping in my SUV on overnights.
- 67avionExplorer III'm afraid that I didn't take the rooftop tents that seriously. I should have asked a lot more questions. When I linked the piece for our family it was almost universal: " what's up with the tent tops"? I tried to explain that it was a Euro trans Africa thing, as best I understood it. But, I've regretted not being more informative. What can I say? Next time I'll pay closer attention.
As to Whazoo's observation about Seldomseen, I recall that he was saying there was report of a naked man in the woods. Both Brian and Whazoo feigned innocence. But Mrs Whazoo knew something was up. - 805greggExplorerThose roof top tents are funny, expensive and they were designed in Africa, where being on the ground could be a disaster, but in the US no big deal to have a ground tent, and no ladder to climb down in the night to pee
- MacHofExplorerD,
Great article - it truly provided a flavor of the Expo. Hope to see you, and the rest of the TC gang, again next year.
Cheers, Henrik - whazooExplorerLooking at it again, my favorite picture is the one of Eric "Seldom Seen Smith" trying to convince a group of us that he's just seen a three headed snake.. And Mrs. Whazoo half believed him. You gotta love a guy that can spin a yarn like that.
- 67avionExplorer IIWell, your remarks embaress me - and of course - please me. I feel humbled.
What can I say except thank you for taking the time to read the piece and look at the photos. Its through this community at RV.net that I have gained the knowledge and understanding of the world of truck camping.
Thanks again.
(Silver, I don't think we're going to make the eastern OX, though there always is a possibility. We spent time with the family that is hosting the event at their farm and they seem like terrific people.)
